As most of you know, I place proper gut bacteria at the top of the list for healthy individuals. Why? Glad you asked! Finally western medicine has been researching and discovering what Functional Medicine has been saying for years: The Gut-Brain axis is what primarily controls mood, attention, concentration, learning, sleep, immune system, and SO MUCH more.
The problem is that while western medicine has described microflora and probiotics as a promising “New” methods of treatment, the western diet has been the fastest way of killing healthy microflora and creating health problems through dysbiosis. As an example, Splenda and other artificial sweeteners have been shown to reduce beneficial bacteria in the intestines by 50%.
Don’t worry though, that’s besides the research showing that artificial sweeteners can kill brain cells (you can decide which is worse when choosing between having a coffee black or adding sweetener). The article below is a little longer than my post, but it is well worth the read. Reducing good bacteria in the gut harms the communication between the gut and brain (yes, they communicate BOTH ways) which is been shown to have some link to: Depression, Anger Disorders, Autism, ADHD, and more. Now it is not to say that probiotics will cure any of these, but the idea is to be more aware of your gut bacteria.
