An common question revolving around probiotics are always about their health benefits and how effective they are. Remember that humans have trillions of microorganisms in our bodies, and mainly in our digestive tract. Considering that over 70% of your immune system is in your gut, this is generally where you would want them to be! So given that information we can see how it may be important to make sure these little guys flourish and not get killed off horribly by the constant ingestion of processed foods and antibiotics (Okay, so I don’t know if killing them off is gruesome, but hey, whatever helps your understand that they’re important right?).

This meta-analysis published on Examine.com intended to see if specific strains of probiotics helped more with seasonal allergies and quality of life. Even with an average of 87% compliance of the probiotic group, the results showed that “The participants taking the probiotic supplement improved their overall quality of life scores. The reduction in constipation scores also suggests improvements in gut health in those taking the probiotics.” While most of these studies were done with different strains of probiotics they all showed improvement to different degrees. Now without going into all the fun details of inflammation, immune system, and IgE regulation, just know that for the most part those who suffer from seasonal allergies saw improvement!

Now I would say that improving your immune system can allow you to finally go outside and smell the roses, but I don’t know if any of you have an intense allergy to roses, and I’d prefer not to be responsible for anyone’s untimely demise. That being said, enjoy not having itchy eyes or the sniffles!
