This was a study published in the Journals of Gerontology Series A, Biological Sciences and Medical Sciences. What the study shows is how exercising reduces age-related decline in mitochondria function. Mitochondria are the little power plants in your cells that use the broken down nutrients you eat and turn them into energy. Without proper functioning mitochondria, we would have an impaired ability to create energy, absorb glucose, and lose many important bodily functions. Now, forget the complicated science behind it. What YOU need to know is healthy mitchondria = Good, and unhealthy mitchondria = Not Good.
The problem is that literally almost everybody that has an excess weight issue or problems with absorbing glucose has unhealthy mitchondria. How do I know this? Well, maybe I’m psychic, or maybe that’s how biology works. In either case we share a similar goal: You want to improve the health of your cells, and I want to be able to read minds (You’re thinking of the number 5… was I close?) – However neither of those goals comes overnight.
The article basically highlights the importance of exercise and shows how a consistent amount can actually improve your cellular health, and increase the number of mitochondria you have! Cool right?
